Welcome to the Clarkson community!  From the passion, engagement, kindness, and generosity of the faculty, to the culture of collaboration, camaraderie, and innovative culture of the students, it’s a rare gem of a place.

…..the intimate, personal educational environment transformed my life. My early adolescent years in a small town, struggling with challenging economic conditions, instilled me with a strong work ethic.  But my confidence was lacking.  Clarkson provide me – through supportive faculty and engaging fellow students – a path to excel, and options to purse graduate studies at some of the most elite academic institutions in the world.

But, the true appreciation for Clarkson was realized upon matriculating from these “elite” institutions – I recognized the Clarkson experience was of equal value.

I’m proud of both my alma maters – but my volunteer activities and supporting funds are directed solely to Clarkson.

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Christensen & Family,

Welcome to Clarkson College of Technology (as it was known when I graduated),

Here I am joyously retired since 2006 having been blessed to have had a very satisfying career both in industry and in the intelligence community.  This could only have been possible because of GOD.  Through His guidance, and that of my parents, He directed me to Clarkson.  Only in looking back can a person clearly see the plan for his/her life.  My great education at Clarkson was part of that plan; Clarkson’s motto, 2 Timothy 2:15 is a testimony to that plan.

I applied to five different schools. Wasn’t thinking Clarkson would be my first choice, but after visiting it was.  I truly appreciated the cooperative culture amongst students as compared to what I understood of other universities. I did much better studying in groups than I ever would’ve on my own. The bonds I formed there amongst my classmates have lasted the years. And finally I just loved the North Country location. An amazing experience. Thus I welcome you to this jewel of a place and organization – which we are honored to have you serve.

Thank You!

Thankyou!

Med School at the University of Rochester was a piece of cake after Clarkson, which gave me the tools and thinking to progress! The same mindset and hard work at Clarkson prepared me for excellence in medicine. Chemical Engineering is a great premed curriculum (you need to add Biology, thank you Dr. Accosta, you were wonderful!). I met my future bride at Clarkson, Margie Simons, skiing at a ski area 30 minutes from Clarkson. We rode up the chairlift together several times, and love was in the air! We had a “learners permit” living together for 10 years, and happily married 41 years after that! We are both so delighted to have chosen Clarkson! It enhanced both our lives in so many ways!

Hugs,

I hope you and your family are prepared for -40 deg F. winters!

Back in my freshman year (’64-’65) we had to walk from the dorms on the hill down, across the Racquett River into town where the college classrooms were located!  If you could survive that you were tough enough to graduate. Today fortunately with the main campus located with the dorms up on the hill, it is so much more civilized. 🙂 Being close to the Adirondacks and a short trip to Canada and Montreal make living there quite pleasant. I returned for my MS in ’69 and my wife and I enjoyed living in downtown Potsdam and traveling to those locations often.

I quit Clarkson after Junior year in spring 1973. When my father died unexpectedly at age 55 in September of that year, I was glad that I was home for this traumatic and life-changing event and not away at school. In the wake of my father’s death, I decided I wanted to go back to Clarkson, change majors, and complete my BS. Clarkson accepted me back with, basically, no questions asked. I resumed pursuit of my Clarkson degree in January 1974, graduating in ’75.

In my senior year I volunteered and served as assistant coach of Clarkson’s first women’s hockey team.  My family has a history of women moving our country closer to gender equity, and I was thrilled to be associated with the first team in a program that has now won 3 NCAA Division 1 championships for Clarkson. This year is the 50th Anniversary of both Title IX and the Clean Water Act — my favorite year for legislation. In my free time the past 30 years, I have co-founded a non-profit named Friends of the Presumpscot River here in Maine and applied my 3 years as a physics major to restoring the river and bringing back runs of diadromous fish to rebuild the fisheries in the river and the Gulf of Maine. So, I also appreciate the River Institute in Beacon and hope to visit or even become associated in some capacity one day.

Enjoy your coming years at Clarkson, root for Tech’s sports teams, and make sure Clarkson helps with any ecological needs the Raquette River may have these days.

Best,

  –Will

Marc, Seema:

A cordial welcome to Clarkson University.  The start of a new school year is always an amazing time in the North Country.  Hope you both enjoy the changing colors, the deep blue skies and the many accents you will hear English spoken- eh! I cannot be at the Inauguration, but should be able to be at the Spring 2023 Trustee Meeting and will say hello then,  Best Wishes, Jim Wood-Clarkson Trustee

Several professors (Hammam, Bray, Mukundan, Cotalessa) took an individual and personal interest in steering me towards a career that has been both fun and rewarding (culminated by my appointment as a Bell Labs Fellow).  And the hockey coach (York) created a special “head manager” position for me when my aspirations to be a walk-on player fell short (I was later diagnosed with MS).  Wow.  Who could ask for more?

And now, I may get to meet Clarkson’s new President (the one with the stunning resume’) if he manages to attend a men’s or women’s hockey game at Princeton.
