Elected Chair of the American Institute of Steel Construction Board of Directors
Clarkson University alumnus Glenn Tabolt BSCE ’78, who later earned his MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, has been elected Chair of the Board of Directors for the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), the national organization dedicated to advancing the design, fabrication, and construction of structural steel.
Tabolt is CEO of STS Steel, a firm he co-founded in 1984 that has since become on of the Northeast’s most respected fabricators of complex steel structures.
His election marks a significant milestone in a distinguished career that began shortly after graduating from Clarkson with a degree in civil engineering. Tabolt started his career with Pittsburgh-Des Moines Steel, a nationally respected steel fabricator before launching STS Steel just six years later. He has served as president and CEO since 2009.
Tabolt has served on the AISC Board since 2017 and has been deeply involved in guiding the organization’s strategic direction. He also serves on the AISC Education Foundation Board of Directors, where he recently completed a term as treasurer.
Throughout his tenure, he has chaired the North American Steel Construction Conference (NASCC) planning committee and played a pivotal role in the development of AISC’s Fabricator Education Training Program, a major initiative designed to strengthen workforce development, technical excellence, and professional training across the industry.
While Clarkson provided the academic foundation and engineering rigor that shaped his professional life, Tabolt credits his father for instilling the work ethic and resilience that propelled his career. “Clarkson taught me how to approach and solve difficult problems,” he says. “But before Clarkson, my father taught me why it matters to work hard and do things the right way.”
His MBA from Pittsburgh broadened his leadership perspective and equipped him to guide a growing company through complex technical, economic, and industry-wide challenges.
Tabolt is a licensed professional engineer in New York and Connecticut and a certified welding inspector.
Looking ahead: As AISC Board Chair, Tabolt will help lead national efforts to advance steel as the preferred material for buildings, bridges, and infrastructure. His priorities include strengthening technical standards, expanding educational programs, and promoting innovation across the industry.
“I’m honored to serve our industry during a time of significant opportunity,” Tabolt says. “Civil engineering and structural steel are essential to America’s built environment, and the work we do today will shape the structures of tomorrow. I am committed to sharing what I’ve learned over my career to strengthen our industry, foster innovation, and support others in their professional growth and career development.”
